CharityBooks 2005 - Newsletter No:1 |
Welcome to the first Charity Books newsletter of 2005! January has seen our first full month of operation and it's been a busy one. ++++++++++++++++++++ Sizeable Donation from World Famous Photographer! ++++++++++++++++++++ At the start of the month we received a sizeable donation of interesting books from Eve Arnold of London. Eve is a fascinating character who had a remarkable career as a world famous photographer: She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of immigrant Russian parents. She began photographing while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York City in 1946, then studied photography (for 6 weeks) with Alexei Brodovitch at New York City's New School for Social Research in 1948. Eve was based in America during the 1950s and came to England in 1962. Except for a six year hiatus, (when she worked in America and China to prepare a book on each of those countries), Mrs. Arnold has been based in Britain. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers in 1980. In 1995 she was made a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and was elected "Master Photographer" - the world's most prestigious photographic honour - awarded by New York's International Center of Photography. In 2003, she was awarded an honorary O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) by the British Government. During the half-century that her career spanned, Eve Arnold did portraits of the most diverse personalities. By far and away the most famous is undoubtedly Marilyn Monroe. The two met each other early in the 1950s. Arnold later said of the situation: 'We were both at the beginning of our careers, and I believe that neither of us knew precisely what we were doing'. ++++++++++++++++++++ Books Selling Well ++++++++++++++++++++ Eve's books are selling well and have already raised over £200 for her chosen charity: The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. Their website is at http://www.torturecare.org.uk Michael Palin is a proud patron of this charity and says: "Torture is a dark area of human experience, but if we are afraid to look into it, then in a way, we condone it. As long as torture and persecution exist, ignoring them is not an option. This is why I shall continue to offer my wholehearted support for the often uncomfortable, frequently heartbreaking work of the Medical Foundation, and whenever I can, urge others to do so as well." ++++++++++++++++++++ More Books Needed ++++++++++++++++++++ If you have some books sitting at home that haven't been touched for years why not make a difference by donating them to your favourite charity? A 2003 survey by Oxfam showed that 30% of respondents had, on average, more than 500 books in their homes. Only 18% said they frequently re-read books and 35% said they rarely or never picked up a book for a second time. Does this apply to you? When did you last read that Iain Banks novel on your living room shelf? Just think you could make a real difference to your favourite charity and the people they help by donating some books to CharityBooks. Up to 80% of sale price goes direct to the charity of your choice. Ideally we need hardback books that are in good condition. Non-fiction books can be just as popular as novels. Call us on 01189 790169 to talk through the donation process. ++++++++++++++++++++ www.charitybooks.co.uk ++++++++++++++++++++ Keep an eye on our website.
